Definition

Pes planus is a condition where the arch or instep ofthe foot collapses and comes in contact with the ground. In some individuals, this arch never develops.

Cause

A flat foot is normal in Infants and toddlers, because the foots arch hasnt yet developed Mostpeoples arches develop throughout childwood, but some people never develop arches. This is a normal variation in foot type, and people without arches may or may not have problems. Painful flat feet in children may be caused by Tarsal coalition, where two or more of the bones in the foot fuse together,limiting motion and often leading to a flat foot. Flat feet can also be caused by fallen arches. Years of wear and hear an weaken the posterior tibial tendon that is responsible for shaping the arch.

Treatment

Flexible flat feet that are painless do not require treatment. If pain occurs an orthotic (arch supporting insert in the shoe) can bring relief. With increased interest in running, shoes designed for pronated feet make long distance running easier and less tiring as they correct positional abnormality. Rigid or painful flat feet require evaluation and treatment depends on tire cause. For tarsal coalition,treatment starts will rest and casting and if this fails to improve pain surgery may be necessary. For problems with posterior tibial tendon treatment starts with rest, anti-inflammatory medications. shoe insert or ankle braces. In advanced cases surgery may be necessary.

Prevention

Most cases are not preventable.
