Different types of knee braces

Knee braces are used for various reasons, including injury prevention, post-surgery recovery and pain relief and come in different types. Common types include compression sleeves for mild support, hinged braces for ligament injuries, patellar tracking braces for kneecap issues, unloader braces for arthritis and functional braces for controlled movement after injury.

Here’s a more detailed look:

1.Compression Knee Sleeves:

Purpose:
Provide mild support, compression and warmth, often used for mild pain and swelling or during activities for extra support, according to orthopedic and spine clinic.

Features:
Typically made of elastic or neoprene, some may have silicone/gel or foam pads & spiral stays for the kneecap.

2.Hinged Knee Braces:

Purpose:
Offer stability and support, particularly for ligament injuries (ACL, MCL, LCL, PCL) or after surgery.

Features:
Have hinges on the sides to allow controlled movement while limiting excessive or harmful motion.

3.Patellar Tracking Braces:

Purpose:

Help with patellar (kneecap) instability or malalignment, reducing pain and discomfort associated with conditions like patellar tendonitis or chondromalacia.

Features:

May include straps, buttresses to guide the kneecap and prevent it from shifting out of place.

4.Unloader Knee Braces: (LP currently does not have such productsPurpose:

Designed to relieve pressure on the affected side of the knee, primarily used for osteoarthritis, shifting weight away from the damaged cartilage.

Features:

Often have a hinge and adjustable straps to apply pressure on the healthy side of the knee.

5.Functional Knee Braces:

Purpose:

Allow for controlled movement while providing support and stability after an injury or surgery.

Features:

Can be more flexible than rehabilitative braces, allowing for a greater range of motion.

6.Rehabilitative knee Braces:LP currently does not have such products

Purpose:

Used after surgery or serious injury to immobilize the knee and allow for controlled healing.

Features:

Often have adjustable hinges and straps to limit movement during the early stages of healing.

7.Prophylactic Knee Braces

Purpose:

Designed to prevent knee injuries, particularly in athletes, by providing support and limiting excessive movement during high-impact activities.

Features:

Often lightweight and offer a good balance between support and mobility.

8.Knee Immobilizer Braces: LP currently does not have such products

Purpose:

Used for severe injuries or post-surgery to completely restrict knee movement and allow for proper healing.

Features:

Rigid and often made of plastic or metal, offering maximum support and immobilization.

When choosing a knee brace, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate type for your specific needs and condition.
